Hyderabad Metro Expansion in Old City Gains Momentum; Safety and Compensation Take Center Stage

Hyderabad, April 14: The Hyderabad Metro Rail project is making significant strides, particularly in the Old City stretch, with major developments in compensation, safety, and infrastructure clearance. As part of the ongoing metro expansion from MG Bus Station (MGBS) to Chandrayangutta, 205 property owners have received compensation totaling Rs. 212 crores, confirmed NVS Reddy, Managing Director of Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML). The 7.5-kilometer corridor will impact around 1100 properties, with several structures already demolished to pave the way for the metro.

“Property owners are voluntarily coming forward and accepting the compensation. Several buildings have been demolished, and debris cleared to facilitate expansion,” Mr. Reddy said while addressing media on April 13.

He further added that highly entangled electric, telephone, and other utility cables along both sides of the stretch are being carefully removed. “All work is being carried out under the supervision of Metro engineers, with support from the revenue and police departments,” he emphasized.

In a related development, while speaking at the 54th National Safety Week celebrations at the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) on March 6, Mr. Reddy underscored the metro’s impeccable safety track record.

“Passenger safety is our highest priority. Hyderabad Metro has maintained a spotless safety record, with no accidents reported during or post-construction,” said Mr. Reddy. He attributed this achievement to modern engineering practices, meticulous risk assessment, and a firm commitment to safety. “Safety is not just compliance—it's a responsibility we carry every day.”

Highlighting the scale and innovation of the project, he added, “Hyderabad Metro is the largest metro rail project in the world implemented under the Public-Private Partnership model. Despite the challenges, we have delivered a globally benchmarked transport system.”Mr. Reddy also highlighted the use of advanced Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology, making Hyderabad Metro the first in India to adopt this system. In recognition of its safety excellence, Hyderabad Metro has been awarded the prestigious ROSPA Gold Award from Glasgow for three consecutive years.

During the NRSC event, Director Dr. Prakash Chauhan praised the alignment of the safety week theme with employee welfare, stressing the need for a holistic approach to workplace safety. NRSC Deputy Director Mrs. Padmavati, senior scientists, and officials were also present at the event. As Hyderabad’s metro rail continues to expand into new regions, the focus on transparent processes, citizen cooperation, and uncompromised safety ensures the city’s public transportation future is on a strong and progressive track.
